The first once-weekly treatment for type 2 diabetes will be made in West Chester Township, according to a recent press release from Amylin Pharmaceuticals.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Amylin Pharmaceuticals’ drug Bydureon Jan. 27. The new drug is expected to be available in pharmacies nationwide in February.

“As the first and only once-weekly diabetes treatment, Bydureon represents an important milestone in Amylin’s promise to bring to market innovative therapies to help improve the lives of people with type 2 diabetes,” said Daniel M. Bradbury, president and chief executive officer of Amylin Pharmaceuticals.

“Bydureon builds upon the proven benefits of Byetta, offering significant improvements in glycemic control in a single weekly dose.”

Byetta, Lilly and Amylin’s diabetes drug, contains the same ingredient as Bydureon. Alkermes created the technology that releases the drug over the course of a week for more convenient dosing.

The Amylin Pharmaceuticals $500 million manufacturing plant, 8814 Trade Port Drive, is already producing the drug which was approved by European Union regulators in June. Spokeswoman for Amylin, Alice Izzo, told the Dayton Daily News that Amylin will increase hiring as the demand for Bydureon increases.

Cincinnati Enquirer contributor Tom Ramstetter reports:

Senior forward Keri Kleist scored 17 points and senior guard Chloe Pavlech added 14 as the top-ranked Sycamore girls’ basketball team cruised past Lakota East 48-39 Saturday afternoon in a Greater Miami Conference girls’ basketball game at Lakota East.

It was the 16th straight win for the Aviators, who took over the top spot in the Enquirer Division I coaches poll from Princeton last week after a win at Princeton Jan. 25. The Aves’ last loss came at the hands of the Vikings Dec. 3.

“(Our schedule) has been brutal,” Sycamore coach Paula Hayden said. “We knew after Princeton that we could not afford another loss. Princeton has that reputation of running the gamut. So Princeton was a big game for us. We beat them, but then we had (Lakota) West, Colerain and (Lakota) East who are three of the top teams in the GMC. Every game, I put on the board that today is a championship game.”

Lakota East, ranked No. 4, was the fourth game in that stretch and Saturday was the Thunderhawks’ Senior Night game. Despite Sycamore building a 12-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, East stormed back to cut the lead to 40-34 with 2:59 to play on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Cydney Franklin to cap a 6-0 run.

Hayden called a timeout at that point and looked to her seniors to come out of the break and make a play. Pavlech drew the attention of the defense out of the inbounds and found a wide-open Kleist under the basket for a momentum-stealing layup.

“She did exactly what we wanted her to do,” Kleist said of Pavlech. “The coaches wanted her to drive because they know that people will help and I’ll be able to be wide open. It felt really great to get that pass and know it was going in. Plays like those really get me pumped. It felt good to beat them on their Senior Night.”

The play was not designed specifically for Kleist, but Hayden knew something would open up.

“We were moving the ball,” Hayden said. “Chloe broke down the defense. She drew three people, bounce-passed to Keri and Keri finished. We worked on that yesterday and we worked on it today. They executed.”

Pavlech was the key to another turning-point play in the first half, giving the Aviators the lead for good at 14-12 with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6:25 to play before halftime. Lakota East had just taken its first lead of the game, 12-11, on a 3-pointer from the wing by Bernice Satterwhite to cap a 7-0 run. Pavlech followed her 3-pointer with two free throws and Lakota East got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

“The biggest thing I thought was for us not to lose our composure and I kind of knew at the same time, we needed a big shot for us to get pumped,” Pavlech said. “I had missed my first three threes, but the fourth one I had confidence it was going in. I was wide-open at the top of the key and I decided to shoot it. That just got us super pumped. From then on, everyone believed this was our game.”

Satterwhite led the Thunderhawks with 14 points and Franklin added 11.

The Aviators travel to Middletown next Saturday for the regular-season finale with a chance to clinch their first GMC title since sharing the crown with Colerain and Princeton in the 1999-2000 season and their first outright GMC title since winning two straight in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, if they get a little help with a Princeton loss, according to the GMC website.

“It’s amazing,” Pavlech said. “This feels great. We have a sign in our locker room that says we will be No. 1 and that’s what we’re working for. For us to have a chance to be No. 1 in the GMC is a big deal because our league is very competitive and very good.”

The league has been very good for a long time, but Hayden had a special feeling about this team before the season.

“I told the girls that for the first time ever, and I’ve been coaching a long, long time, that I put them No. 1 in the city and put them No.1 in the GMC,” Hayden said. “I don’t do that unless I believe in my heart that was a possibility.

“They know, but they’re not overly excited. They’re happy. They’re pleased. But it’s not over.”

Cincinnati Enquirer contributor Tom Ramstetter reports:

Senior wing Jackson Blue calmly hit two free throws with 45 seconds to play and Lakota West clinging to a three-point lead and the Firebirds held on to upset No. 3 Mason 73-65 Friday night at Mason.

The Firebirds are unranked in the latest Division I Enquirer coaches’ poll.

Senior wing Kayuane Ross hit one of two free throws one possession later and junior wing Monty Boykins added two more to ice the game for Lakota West in the closing seconds.

“I’m just trying to relax and go through my normal routine so I can knock it down,” Blue said of his late free throws. “I just did what I do normally and made the shots. It’s just practice. Coach has us shoot a lot of free throws. It’s routine, so I’m used to just stepping up to the line and making a shot.”

Mason furiously trimmed a late 68-58 deficit to three points, led by senior guard JD Sprague who scored six in a 7-0 Mason run that put the Comets in position to tie the game. That set up Blue at the line with less than a minute to play.

“They were playing really well,” Boykins said. “They were trapping us and we had to make a few quick adjustments. I think we handled it pretty well. It was pretty nerve-wracking. It’s just the will to win. We had more heart than them tonight.”

Boykins scored a team high 25 points, junior point guard Ali Barnes scored 17 and Blue added 16 as West avenged a 70-60 loss to the Comets Jan. 6 at Lakota West.

Sprague led all scorers with a season-high 26 points. Mason senior forward Darin Harris added 14 for the Comets.

“It feels great to come in here and steal a win at Mason Arena,” Boykins said. “It’s always been tough for us every time we play here. It’s the first time I’ve ever won here. It was definitely something that motivated us, to get them back.”

Mason had beaten Lakota West in the teams’ three previous meetings. The Firebirds’ last win over Mason was a 59-55 overtime final Jan. 15, 2010 at Mason.

Blue said the Firebirds let a win slip away in the first game this season. This time, the Firebirds didn’t falter.

The Comets led briefly in the third quarter when a layup by Sprague put Mason In front 43-42. But Lakota West surged ahead for good when a free throw by sophomore Tyler Williams made the score 46-45 with 5:55 to play in the third.

“It was a big game for us,” Blue said. “We played them earlier in the season. We were up on them and we let them come back into it. We had a big lead again today and they started to come back. We just wouldn’t let them.”

Lakota West led 42-41 at halftime after leading by as many as 10 points twice in the second quarter. Senior guard Jonathan DeLotell hit a 3-pointer off the glass at the buzzer for Mason to give the Comets momentum heading into the locker room. Sprague scored 13 points in the second quarter for Mason.

Lakota West put together a rally of its own in the first quarter after trailing 4-0 early and 8-4 midway through the opening period. Barnes hit a 3-pointer with 3:45 to play in the first to give the Firebirds their first lead of the game at 12-11. Lakota West led 24-19 after the first quarter and never trailed again in the first half.

“We played hard defense, played together and it was a good team win,” Blue said. We can get a lot better.”

Voice of America, which sent its original broadcast overseas 70 years ago this month, will see backers of its first-built transmitting station begin fundraising this year to become a national museum.

The impact of the local transmitting station was felt in 1944 when the building and its six 200-kilowatt transmitters were completed about a year after groundbreaking. The station was instantly able to broadcast news to Europe, Africa and South America.

“What happened here is something that I suppose only a few of us in the community understand or realize the significance of,” National VOA Museum of Broadcasting board president Ken Riser said. “None of this had been done before. They couldn’t just pull things off a shelf. They had to actually design, build and construct it all from scratch.

“These were things that were probably equivalent of going to the moon in the ‘60s.”

Currently, the old VOA Bethany Relay Station is undergoing approximately $500,000 worth of exterior restoration work that includes installation of a new roof and block maintenance on the rear of the building.

Once completed in the spring, it will be up to the museum’s board of directors to raise approximately $12 million to make it a revenue generating landmark.

“When they are finished, the building will be pretty well secure from the elements. From there it is our job to raise the funds to turn the building into a first class museum,” Riser said.

Securing the building has been the responsibility of West Chester Township since 1998, three years after new technology caused the U.S. government to close Bethany Station in 1995.

In addition to a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission, which will reimburse the township for the restoration work, the township also received a $1 million grant in 2008 to repair the exterior facade, windows and entry doors, as well as some electrical. During the 2008 restoration, the township had to pay an additional $731,653. Overall, West Chester has spent around $1.68 million from its own budget on utilities and improvements since 2004.

If and when the museum is completed, it is expected to attract 25,000 visitors, bring in $475,000 in out of area direct spending and provide an overall economic impact in excess of $1.7 million annually, according to estimates by museum design firm Jack Rouse Associates.

“It would certainly be a real asset to West Chester and draw people all over the country and the world,” said Mark Hecquet, executive director of the Butler County Visitors Bureau.

“Hopefully it comes to fruition because it is a one of a kind thing and we should do all we can to make it a reality.”

Before the latest restoration project, the VOA museum opened its doors briefly in the fall of 2011 for the first time in two years to provide public tours. This year, the museum is expected to open after the roof work is completed while it attempts to raise funds.

“Most of the transmitter stations have been decommissioned. There is nothing left, not even a marker to show what was there,” Bethany Station’s last plant supervisor David Snyder said.

“When we open, we will have a lot of information on Voice of America and its history. It will be exciting to come here and see something, which the American public knows very little about.”

While Americans may not be aware of Voice of America’s history during World War II and the Cold War, since it only transmitted broadcasts oversees, many should be able to identify with the other two museums that are located in the same building – The Gray History of Wireless Museum, which features one of the country’s largest collections of antique radios, and The Media Heritage’s Greater Cincinnati Museum of Broadcast History, which boasts local radio and television programming memorabilia.

Today, Voice of America is still operational and is funded by the U.S. government. VOA now broadcasts through the Internet, mobile, social media, radio and television in 43 languages and reaches a weekly global audience of 141 million.

Locally, Clyde Haehnle, who was one of the original engineers who helped design and build the transmitting station in West Chester, takes great pride knowing the station’s impact on the outcome of World War II.

“To see it still here and be preserved and restored for historical purposes is a great thrill to me,” said Haehnle, who will turn 90 in October.

“I hope I can see it finished.”

The athletic departments at Lakota East and Lakota West high schools recently named their athletes of the week. Junior Emily Neihaus and senior Jamie Keesling received the honor at Lakota West, while senior Taylor Alden and junior Jimmy McCarthy were honored at Lakota East.

Niehaus led or was tied for the team lead in assists and steals the past three games, at Oak Hills last Wednesday, at Sycamore last Saturday and against Lakota West this Wednesday. She also tied a career high with 11 points in the 68-52 loss against Sycamore.

Keesling was the only double winner for Lakota West wrestling last week. Keesling, who competes at 170 pounds, earned a 2-0 decision in last Wednesday’s match against Lakota East. He also added an 11-8 win at Harrison last Saturday.

Alden, according to EastThunderhawks.com, has been among the team leaders in each of the matches. Also, according to the high school sports website: “Her consistency has helped the team keep pace and helped to push all of her teammates. She has been willing to step into whatever position is asked of her in the baker games and has performed well.”

McCarthy, according to EastThunderhawks.com, rolled a 424 series (221, 203) to lead the boys’ team to their first victory of the season over Kings. This was the high series rolled by any of the boys this year and it came at a good time as it led them to a 99-pin victory. McCarthy also had a solid day bowling in the fifth position on the baker team. Despite being a first-year team member, he has consistently been among the team leaders and has shown good improvement, according to the Lakota East athletic website.

The Lakota West Chorale will sing one song (“Witness”) by them selves and then be joined by the Cincinnati Brass Band in a performance of a piece called “Homeland.”

This is the second time this year a choir group from Lakota West has been involved in a charity concert.
After faxing seven national letters of intent for Lakota West football players, the high school honored six other future college athletes during a special afterschool signing ceremony Thursday.

During the ceremony, families, friends, classmates and coaches gathered to congratulate Ali Green (golf – Ashland University), Kim Love (soccer – Purdue University), Kelly Mack (soccer – Wright State University), Lauren Pratt (soccer – Ohio Dominican University), Brady Holmer (cross country – Northern Kentucky) and Amanda Shelby (cross country – Mount St. Joseph).

Green, who selected Ashland over Western Illinois, Ball State and Marshall, was named first team all-state this fall after finishing fourth at the Division I girls’ golf state tournament in Columbus. She was also selected to the Division I all-city first team by The Cincinnati Enquirer and first team all-GMC. Green says: “They have a great golf program, the education program is excellent, and it’s not too far from home and they have the No. 1 ranked college cafeteria in the country. Ashland is a nationally ranked program that consistently finishes around the top of their conference.” In college, Green plans on studying special education.

Love, who selected Purdue over Dayton and Miami, was also selected Division I all-city first team by The Cincinnati Enquirer and first team all-GMC. She will join 2010 Lakota West graduate Alex Azeez at Purdue. Love says: “When I went to visit Purdue, I just knew that it was the school I wanted to be at. The campus was beautiful and the team made me feel welcome right away. The coaches really care about their players. They make sure that the player’s health is well monitored and they provide their players with every opportunity to succeed on and off the field.” In college, Love plans on studying biomedical or chemical engineering.

Mack, who selected Wright State over Cincinnati, Dayton and Xavier, was selected second team all-GMC and on the GMC all-academic team this past fall. Mack says: “I loved the coaches and it is a great college atmosphere. They all care about each other like family. They focus and are successful, but still enjoy the game.” In college, Mack plans on studying athletic training.

Pratt was also selected to the Division I all-city first team by The Cincinnati Enquirer and first team all-GMC. Pratt says: “ODU is a great academic fit for me. The campus is very small and it is easy to get around quickly. The coaching staff is wonderful and I like how the program has developed.

In order to replace a large culvert under the roadway, a portion of U.S. 42 in West Chester Township will be closed beginning Feb. 18. The work is scheduled to take 14 days, but could be completed sooner, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The closure will take place near the 8700 block of U.S. Route 42, between Butler-Warren and Cox roads. Access to all businesses and properties will be maintained throughout the closure.

An approved detour route will be posted that directs traffic north on Cox Road, east on Tylersville Road and southwest on U.S. Route 42. The route is reversed for those headed southwest on U.S. Route 42. The detour is an additional 1.29 miles.

The closure is part of ODOT’s $9.1 million project, which includes the widening of U.S. Route 42 to three lanes providing a through lane in each direction and a middle two-way left-turn lane from Fields-Ertel Road north to Butler-Warren Road.

The project, which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2012, also includes the addition of left turn lanes on both approaches of Dimmick Road

The upcoming closure has presented challenges for businesses in the corridor, according to a press release from West Chester Township. However, the township does not have direct control over the construction process and will continue to work closely with ODOT.

Cincinnati Enquirer’s Michael D. Clark reports:

Before Lakota Schools can tackle its looming budget shortfall, all officials need to be on the same page – especially administrators and the governing board, said Superintendent Karen Mantia.

Mantia, at Wednesday’s board meeting, asked for clarification as to whether its five members agree that cutting $9 million to balance next school year’s budget is the way to go.

The unusual request was brought about in part by an extensive and lengthy public discussion during last month’s board meeting that saw Mantia fielding a series of questions, primarily from veteran board member Joan Powell. Their exchange called into question some major aspects of Mantia’s previously announced goal to slice $9 million in personnel and programs from the 2012-13 school year.

Lakota faces a projected shortfall of $14.1 million by 2015.

Mantia said she was seeking a clear directive from the board.

“The question on the table is do you want a spending deficit? We are going broke and something will have to change,” Mantia told the board. “We need some direction and it needs to be clear.”

“If we are working as a team, which I hope we are, then this team needs to work together,” she said.

After board discussion, members agreed and unanimously voted to order Mantia’s administration to proceed with planning the $9 million in reductions.

Powell said the $9 million “remains the target.” She said part of the problem was “a little bit of a disconnect” between the board and district leaders.

At the last board meeting, administrators rolled out the first – preschool programs – of a seven-phase plan in exactly where the $9 million would be cut.

At the board’s Feb. 13 meeting the reduction plan for grades 7-12 is to be unveiled, followed in subsequent weeks by plans for elementary grades, administration, district-wide personnel, business and extracurricular programs.

Lakota voters rejected three operating levies from 2010 to 2011, the most recent in November.

Cynamon Trokhan was recently reappointed and sworn in by Probate Court Judge Randy Rogers to serve a three-year term as a park commissioner for the MetroParks of Butler County.

Trokhan first became a park commissioner in 2010 having served the last two years of a term vacated earlier by Kathleen Klink (now of Hamilton City Council). She had most recently served as president of the park commissioners in 2011.

“As a resident of Butler County and mother, I know how important a good park system is to families and home values,” Trokhan said. “And as a partner in a local business, I understand the concept of maximizing income and return while minimizing expenses.”

Trokhan will continue to serve on the Board of the MetroParks with Greg Amed, president and Edward Dwyer, vice president.

“I have found the last two years as a park commissioner to be very rewarding,” Trokhan said. “In just a short period of time, we have accomplished many things, and I look forward to being a part of the team that continues to fulfill promises made earlier.”

Trokhan completed both undergraduate and law degrees at Case Western Reserve University and is an estate planning and corporate attorney with Parrish, Marcum, Hirka & Trokhan Co., LPA. Trokhan is also involved with Great Miami Valley YMCA, The Presbyterian Church of Hamilton, Hamilton Junior Women’s League, St. Joseph Consolidated School and Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.

“Park Commissioner Trokhan’s background and dedication have served the residents of Butler County well,” said Jonathan Granville, executive director of MetroParks. “All of the members of the MetroParks Board are working hard to achieve the county-wide goals outlined for them by the local citizens. They are managing to accomplish these objectives while still being as frugal as ever.”

After verbally committing in June, Lakota West safety Dawson Fletcher made it official when his signed national letter of intent was faxed to Indiana University on Signing Day Wednesday morning.

“I never thought I would be going to Indiana, but I was just in the right place at the right time,” Fletcher said.

The right time and place was an IU summer camp where Fletcher impressed head coach Kevin Wilson.

“Dawson’s was as impressive or the most impressive kid we had in camp last year – running, jumping, change of direction,” Wilson said.

“We’ve got him as maybe a safety-type, but you watch him run and he might be a corner when he gets here because he’s not so big that he can’t run, but you can see physically he will come up and tackle very well.”

Photos: Lakota East Signing Day

It was Fletcher’s versatility that also impressed IU defensive coordinator Doug Mallory.

“To be able to recruit a defensive back that has that versatility just makes him more marketable,” Mallory said. “To be physical enough to play safety, but athletic enough to play corner, I like that combination. Those kids are hard to find.”

It didn’t take long for Wilson and Mallory to decide to offer a scholarship to Fletcher, who at the time didn’t have one.

However, after performing well at earlier summer camps, Fletcher was expecting to receive offers from the University of Toledo and Ohio University. Even though more offers appeared to be on way, Fletcher quickly gave his verbal commitment and became an instant IU fan.

“It was exciting, but surreal the same time because it wasn’t long ago that I was still watching college football and thinking that it is so far away,” Fletcher said. “Then when you are a senior in high school you almost don’t believe it. I am just blessed that I have this opportunity.”

This past fall, Fletcher was second on Lakota West in total tackles with 70. The all-GMC first teamer also had 5.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 interception that he returned 77 yards, 3 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble.

“When you have these kids signing out, what a great opportunity for their lives and I am not talking about football. They have all been given an opportunity to give themselves such a step up in life,” Lakota West head coach Larry Cox said.

“Today is about winning and they won through their academics and their athletics. They have proven themselves worthy to the level, which is one step away from the pros, to play football again. How can you not be excited about that?”

Fellow senior defensive players lineman Blake Bell (California University of Penn.), linebacker Jordan Darland (Olivet Nazarene University), linebacker Cole Stalker (University of Findlay) will also continue their football careers at the next level.

The 6-foot-3 200-pound Ross provided matchup problems for other teams in the Greater Miami Conference in 2011, averaging 25.6 yards per catch. Overall, Ross finished with 14 catches for 358 yards and six touchdowns. For his play, Ross was named second team all-GMC and earned him attention from many Division I scouts, according to Cox.

“Fort Scott is in the Kansas JUCOs, which is the toughest in the nation,” Cox said. “They will sign out 10-to-12 Division I players per year. He has a great opportunity and he is very humble and grateful for it.”

This week, two former Fort Scott players who went on to sign with the University of South Florida, will be playing in the Super Bowl. Both players, linebacker Jacquian Williams (78 total tackles in 2011 as a rookie) and Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (86 total tackles, 16.5 sacks in 2011), are key contributors on the New York Giants’ defense.

In addition to the signees, according to Cox, Lakota West senior running back Marcus Davis will be a preferred walk-on or possibly a greyshirt at Murray State University. Davis rushed for 1,118 yards in the fall and is third in school history in career rushing yards.

(WestChesterBuzz.com will post a separate story on Dawson Fletcher soon with comments from the IU coaching staff)

A total of 17 seniors, who will compete in nine different sports in college, were honored during a special signing ceremony at Lakota East High School on National Signing Day Wednesday.

“The neat thing about this morning is that just about every program we have is represented,” Lakota East Athletic Director Richard Bryant said.

“(The large class) legitimizes what we do as a public school system in making sure we put our kids in position to be successful and be able to continue what they want to do and follow their academic pursuits.”

Before college, there is one Lakota East senior who still believes he has plenty to prove on the high school level after losing in the tennis state singles final the past two seasons.

“It is more of a focus than it has been in the past few years because it is my last chance,” Xavier signee Zach Mueck said.

Mueck, who was selected as The Cincinnati Enquirer’s tennis player of the year last spring, was also considering the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University and the University of Notre Dame.

While Mueck came up short last season, his classmates Michael Conrad and Alex Conrad were key contributors in Lakota East’s first state championship in a varsity sport.

Like Mueck, Conrad was named player of the year in his sport by The Cincinnati Enquirer. In 2011, he finished the year with a 5-1 record, a 1.11 earned run average and tied a Lakota school district record with 115 strikeouts.

“I am excited to finish out the season and hopefully do as well as we did last year, but I also can’t wait to get down there and play at a higher level,” Conrad said. “I feel that I am ready for it.”

His best friend and teammate, Alex Corna who will be playing ball at Ohio University, finished the year with a .381 batting average and a team-leading .532 on-base percentage.

Joining Mueck, Conrad and Corna as honorees during Wednesday’s ceremony were fellow athletic standouts Lauren Beitel (volleyball – Otterbein University), Hannah Berling (volleyball – Tusculum College) Emily Bostian (volleyball – Otterbein), Michaela Buczek (lacrosse – College of Mount St. Joseph), Ainsely Ellison (softball – Hillsdale College), Sofey Fugate (tennis – Heidelberg University), Alyssa Grevenkamp (basketball – University of Findlay), Jessika Hall (swimming – Michigan State University), Tori Meyer (lacrosse – Albright College), Mark Minch (basketball – Ohio Dominican University), Tony O’Connor (cross country/track – Northern Kentucky University), Joe Postlewait (lacrosse – Walsh University), Hannah Sigala (volleyball – Morehead State University) and Whitney Wyckoff (basketball – Yale University).

A Mason-based business with a warehouse in West Chester broke ground on a new office expansion project Monday.

Intelligrated Inc., the fast-growing supplier of material handling systems to retailers and other companies, began construction on a new facility that is expected to bring 200 new jobs over the next three years.

An artist's rendering of the planned office expansion for Intelligrated Inc. The building is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012. Photo provided

The new 60,000-90,000-square-foot facility located next to Intelligrated’s Mason headquarters on Innovation Way is expected to be completed in the fall and will allow the company to expand its engineering, customer service and research and development staffing and testing facilities.

“We aim to be the most technologically-advanced player in the material handling industry,” said Intelligrated CEO Chris Cole. “The new building will help us to expand our footprint, grow our technical staff and create advanced productivity solutions.”

Intelligrated, one of Greater Cincinnati’s largest privately held companies, saw growth of more than 38 percent in 2011, said Cole.

The company employs about 2,000 nationally, including 800 in Ohio. Besides its Mason headquarters and engineering facility, which employs 200, Intelligrated employs about 400 at a nearly 300,000 square-foot plant in West Chester.

Intelligrated received a $15 million expansion package from Ohio and Mason that included a combination of an extension of the company’s existing job creation tax credit, state and local government loans, property tax abatement and a grant from the State.

“It’s a substantial commitment and investment on (Intelligrated’s) part,” said Mason Mayor David Nichols. ”Not only has this been an amazing accomplishment, this has been achieved in one of the worst economic slumps in modern history.

The company, which produces conveyor systems and other material handling equipment, was launched in 2001 by Cole, and president and COO Jim McCarthy. Intelligrated’s ownership includes Gryphon Investments in San Francisco and Tudor Capital of Boston.

Cole credits the company’s success to its strong commitment to customer service

“We’ve been very careful to keep our customers happy for the long run and we’ve gained a lot of share in the business in a bad economic environment,” he said. “We’re not done growing… we expect this to be another record year.”

In November, Lakota officials announced that it would need to make around $9 million in cuts. The BOE could change that figure Wednesday.

Last week, school officials announced that it could merge its preschool programs with county programs, potentially saving the district $1.2 million.

The merger would affect an estimated 288 preschool students in Lakota’s three early childhood education buildings and would eliminate 17 classroom jobs for the 2012-13 school year.

Board members took no action on the proposed merger but plan to vote next month after gathering public input about the plan. Officials made the reduction plan available for public review on Lakota’s web site at www.lakotaonline.com and are encouraging feedback from the community via email.

The district also made it known in January that it would roll out reduction proposals in phases to encourage public discussion.

Lakota’s annual operating budget is about $154 million, and the district faces a $14.1 million projected deficit in 2015 without voter approval of a new operating tax in 2012.

Cincinnati Enquirer’s Paul McKibben reports:

Liberty Town Square, billed as the largest retail development ever in Butler County, cleared a key hurdle Monday when county commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding.

The $300 million project, with its promise of 3,200 jobs during construction and another 4,600 permanent jobs for people who work there when shops open, languished for several years because of the economy.

The agreement includes the county, Liberty Township and developer Steiner + Associates of America.

Under the agreement, the county will pay up to 60 percent of the public infrastructure improvements not to exceed $30 million. The township will contribute 10 percent; not to exceed $5 million and a new community authority/developer will pay the rest.

Township trustees approved a memorandum of understanding last week to help fund $56 million in road improvements and a parking garage for the proposed project at Liberty Way and Interstate 75.

Steiner + Associates had asked commissioners for $55 million toward infrastructure improvements for the “lifestyle” retail center, which would be similar to Easton Town Center in Columbus and The Greene in Beavercreek.

Commissioner Chuck Furmon said the county will contribute $20 million in existing funds from a tax increment financing district, with another $10 million – possibly in $5 million increments – as Steiner reaches certain benchmarks in the project.

The money would back bonds that would be sold to pay for infrastructure.

“We want them to reach what they say they are going to do before we give the other $10 (million),” Furmon said.

Township trustees set several conditions on Steiner, including a prohibition on raiding other successful retail projects in Butler County – such as Bridgewater Falls in Fairfield Township – to fill Liberty Town Square.

The first phase of the project, worth $177 million on 60 acres, is expected to open around May 2014 with two department stores, specialty retail shops, a mix of restaurants, 100,000 square feet of class A office space and about 150 high-end apartments.

Groundbreaking is expected by November.

Improvements to Cincinnati-Dayton Road at the Ohio 129 interchange, partly to accommodate the increase in traffic from Liberty Town Square, already are being planned.

Yaromir Steiner, who founded the Columbus-based development company, put it on hold in 2008 when the economy tanked.

Since then, it has been scaled back in size and value. Steiner initially proposed the project at $500 million. When completed, Liberty Town Square will sit on 100 acres and include up to 2.5 million square feet of commercial space.

The other four committed seniors include safety Dawson Fletcher (Indiana University), defensive end Blake Bell (University of California, Penn.), linebacker Jordan Darland (Olivet Nazarene University) and linebacker Cole Stalker (University of Findlay).

That group, along with running back Marcus Davis, wide receiver Bubba Williams, cornerback Peair Foster, safety Antonio Darden and offensive lineman Neil Recker could sign with their school of choice Wednesday on National Signing Day.

Odom chose Georgetown over St. Joseph College (Ind.) and Ohio Dominican University, according to Lakota West head coach Larry Cox. Last season, the 6-foot-2 295-pound Odom played both ways. On defense, Odom registered 10.5 tackles and had a fumble recovery at limited time at defensive tackle. Odom was selected first team all-Greater Miami Conference for his play on the offensive line.

Meanwhile, Ross selected Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) over Hutchinson Community College and Iowa Central Community College. The football program at Fort Scott has a rich tradition of helping players sign with Division I football teams.

This week, two former Fort Scott players who went on to sign with the University of South Florida, will be playing in this week’s Super Bowl. Both players, linebacker Jacquian Williams (78 total tackles in 2011 as a rookie) and Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (86 total tackles, 16.5 sacks in 2011), are key players on the New York Giants’ defense.

The 6-foot-3 200-pound Ross gave defenses in the GMC fits in 2011, averaging 25.6 yards per catch. Overall, Ross finished with 14 catches for 358 yards and six touchdowns. For his play, Ross was named second team all-GMC.

Work on two light towers Wednesday will require lane closures on southbound Interstate 75, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The first job, which will involve crews erecting a light tower, will take place between Hamilton-Mason Road and Tylersville Road (mile marker 23) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. During the job, the left lane will be closed.

That night, while workers repair a different light tower, the right lane just before the ramp to Galbraith Road (mile marker 11) will be closed from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Law enforcement officers will be used for traffic control during each closure. Lighting contractor American Lighting & Signalization will be performing the work.

Arrow boards and signs will be in place prior to the work zone to alert motorists of the upcoming road closure.

To help ensure the safety of the construction workers as well as the traveling public, motorists should remain alert, reduce their speed and watch for stopped traffic while passing through the work zone.

For additional information on lane and road closures caused by construction, accidents or other related traffic events, visit www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.

U.S. 42 closure: Culvert replacement will require closing U.S. 42 between Cox Road and Tylersville Road from Feb. 18 to March 2, according to ODOT. The closure will be approximately 475 feet north of Manors Drive.

The posted detour for northbound U.S. 42 traffic will be north (left) on Cox Road to east (right) on Tylersville Road, back to U.S. 42. The detour for southbound U.S. 42 traffic will be the same in reverse. The detour is an additional 1.29 miles.
