A few days after the schedule for the Crosstown Showdown was released, Lakota West head football coach Larry Cox released his team’s full 2012 schedule.

The Crosstown Showdown game, which will be the Firebirds’ season opener, will be against La Salle at Nippert Stadium Saturday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m.

“The kids really enjoy playing in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown. You know you are going to play a quality opponent in a collegiate venue and they do a great job of creating a big time atmosphere,” Cox said.

“As a coach, games like this help me measure where we need to be as we approach league play and also gives our program great exposure. There isn’t a negative to playing in a game like this. If you can get a win, it really sets your whole season off on the right track and playing a good team like La Salle makes that a great challenge.”

Besides the season opener, Lakota West will have road games at Glen Este Aug. 31, at Fairfield Sept. 21, at Oak Hills (lost 25-21 in 2011) Oct. 5 and at Colerain (lost 24-19 in 2011) Oct. 19; and homes against Anderson (defeated 20-16 in 2011) Sept. 7, Mason Sept. 14, Princeton (lost 27-21 in 2011) Sept. 28, Middletown (lost 47-7 in 2011) Oct. 12 and Lakota East (defeated 25-20 in 2011) Oct. 26.

Here is a look at the 2012 schedule (2011 record):

Aug. 25 – vs. La Salle (7-3 overall, 1-2 in Greater Catholic League)
Aug. 31 – at Glen Este (4-6 overall, 1-4 in Fort Ancient Valley Conf.)
Sept. 7 – vs. Anderson (4-6 overall, 2-3 in Fort Ancient Valley Conf.)
Sept. 14 – vs. Mason (7-4 overall, 5-2 in GMC)
Sept. 21 – at Fairfield (1-9 overall, 0-7 in GMC)
Sept. 28 – vs. Princeton (7-3 overall, 4-3 in GMC)
Oct. 5 – at Oak Hills (4-6 overall, 2-5 in GMC)
Oct. 12 – vs. Middletown (10-2 overall, 6-1 in GMC)
Oct. 19 – at Colerain (10-2 overall, 7-0 in GMC)
Oct. 26 – at Lakota East (4-6 overall, 2-5 in GMC)

This past fall, the Firebirds complied a 3-7 overall record and 2-5 mark within the GMC.

(All 2012 Lakota West football games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. with exception to the La Salle game which will be played at 8 p.m. at Nippert Stadium)

Lakota East High School releases football schedule

The Lakota East athletic department recently released its 2012 varsity football schedule, which features three out-of-conference games.

The first out-of-conference game, also the season opener, will be at home against Western Hills High School on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. Last season, the Thunderhawks hosted Western Hills in the season opener, defeating the Mustangs by the score of 28-6.

Lakota East will follow that game with a home game against Winton Woods (defeated 38-37 in OT in 2011) Aug. 31 and an away game at Northmont Sept. 7.

“I think it is very challenging,” Lakota East head football coach Rick Haynes said of the 2012 schedule. “Western Hills is always going to be athletic, Winton Woods has been a power in Division II the last few years and Northmont is always a power up in Dayton.”

After the Northmont game, Lakota East will begin conference play at Oak Hills Sept. 14 before hosting Middletown Sept. 21.

“Once you get in our league – we had four teams that qualified for the playoffs out of our conference – it is always going to be tough,” Haynes said. “Middletown has the reigning Mr. Football coming back in Jalin Marshall, so that will be a challenge.”

Lakota East will round out the schedule with road games at Hamilton (defeated 17-8 in 2011) Sept. 28, at Mason (lost 28-14 in 2011) Oct. 12, at Lakota West (lost 25-20 in 2011) Oct. 26; and with home games against Sycamore (lost 28-25 in 2011) Oct. 5 and Fairfield (defeated 44-13 in 2011) Oct. 19.

Here is a look at the 2012 schedule (2011 record):

Aug. 24 – vs. Western Hills (5-5 overall, 5-1 in Cin. Metro Athletic Conf.)
Aug. 31 – vs. Winton Woods (5-5 overall, 4-1 in Fort Ancient Valley Conf.)
Sept. 7 – at Northmont (4-6 overall, 2-3 in Greater Western Ohio Conf.)
Sept. 14 – at Oak Hills (4-6 overall, 2-5 in GMC)
Sept. 21 – vs. Middletown (10-2 overall, 6-1 in GMC)
Sept. 28 – at Hamilton (4-6 overall, 2-5 in GMC)
Oct. 5 – vs. Sycamore (8-3 overall, 5-2 in GMC)
Oct. 12 – at Mason (7-4 overall, 5-2 in GMC)
Oct. 19 – vs. Fairfield (1-9 overall, 0-7 in GMC)
Oct. 26 – at Lakota West (3-7 overall, 2-5 in GMC)

This past fall, the Thunderhawks complied a 4-6 overall record and 2-5 mark within the GMC.

(All 2012 Lakota East football games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.)

Lakota East High School honored nine student athletes Wednesday during its spring signing day event. Among those recognized include Jacob Landers (Baldwin Wallace College, wrestling), Ivan Thomas (Kentucky Christian University, football), Tyler Overberg (College of Mount St. Joseph, golf), Morgan Weinheimer (University of Mississippi, volleyball), Jeff Mundy Jr. (Kentucky Christian University, football), Tanner Lyons (Centre College, track and field), Aleth Pashi (Otterbein University, basketball), Jacqui Tackett (Mount St. Joseph, lacrosse) and Molly Blomer (Nova Southeastern University, basketball).

“It was awesome. I was excited to see all my friends sign,” said Weinheimer, who was also considering Wright State University and Xavier University, among others. “It’s exciting because I want to see them do big things.”

The 5’4″ Weinheimer, who played the libero position for the Thunderhawks, was a first team All-GMC selection in 2011. She also led the GMC with 5.34 digs per game.

Her senior volleyball classmates, Hannah Berling (Tusculum College), Hannah Sigala (Morehead State University), Lauren Beitel (Otterbein) and Emily Bostian (Otterbein) were all honored at a signing day event Feb. 1. Joining Weinheimer at Wednesday’s signing were basketball players Aleth Pashi and Molly Blomer. In February, their teammates Alyssa Grevenkamp (University of Findlay) and Whitney Wyckoff (Yale University) were also recognized.

Also on Wednesday, two senior football players, offensive lineman Ivan Thomas and defensive back Jeff Mundy Jr., signed on to play at the same college – Kentucky Christian University.

“They (KCU) are going to receive two good players, two good people and hopefully they will leave the program better than they left it,” Lakota East head football coach Rick Haynes said.

“It is always great to see guys forward their careers and move on to the next level. I think, both of them, as long as they put in the time and effort are going to have success.”

Former Lakota West football players get chance with Bengals

Posted by akiefaber May 3rd, 2012, 9:49 am Post a Comment

Lakota West graduates Grant Hunter and Josh Chichester will both have the opportunity to prove to the Cincinnati Bengals that they are worth a roster spot.

Josh Chichester

Hunter, who played linebacker at Butler, was among one of the 14 college free agents that the Bengals signed Wednesday. While Chichester, was one of the three players with local ties who were invited to try out at next weekend’s, May 11-13, rookie minicamp.

Last season, at Butler, Hunter led his team in sacks with 10 and in tackles for loss with 15.5. During the NFL Draft process, Hunter worked out for the Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts.

According to a story posted on the Butler University official athletic website, Hunter almost didn’t answer the Bengals’ phone call when he noticed it was a 513 area code and thought that it was a telemarketer or an automated sales call.

“It turned out it was the linebackers’ coach from the Bengals, and I think I was speechless for about five minutes,” Hunter told butlersports.com. “I just remember saying thank you over and over again. It was probably one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Meanwhile, Chichester, who worked out for the Bengals and the New England Patriots before the NFL Draft, caught 97 passes for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns during his four-year career as a wide receiver and tight end at the University of Louisville.

Local lineman overcomes injury and picks up college offers

Posted by akiefaber April 26th, 2012, 1:45 pm Post a Comment
Kyle Meadows

It was January of 2010 when one of the nation’s top recruits, Lakota West senior linebacker Jordan Hicks, decided that he was going to continue his football career at the University of Texas.

At that time, fellow Lakota West student Kyle Meadows was just a freshman and expecting to play junior varsity football the following fall.

Lakota West head coach Larry Cox had different plans.

That season, Cox put Meadows on varsity and told the sophomore that he could be the next Jordan Hicks.

“When he was a young kid, as a sophomore, it was baptism under fire,” Cox said. “He had to go out there and play…and I felt that he had a chance to be pretty good.

“But, we really had big ideas for him going into his junior year.”

Armed with experience, athletic ability and size, Meadows was eager to prove himself as an elite high school offensive tackle in 2011.

However, after playing in only three games, the 6-foot-5, 295-pound junior suffered a season-ending injury that jeopardized his football career.

Kyle Meadows is one of the area's most-recruited football players and is starting to lean towards to playing for Florida State.

“I literally cried. I thought all of it was gone,” Meadows said of his chances to play in college after he broke his fibula and tore ligaments in his ankle. “But coach (Cox) talked to me and said that I couldn’t worry about. He said that all I had to do was get better and keep working.”

With one of his legs in a cast, Meadows worked on his upper body. Then, after surgery, it quickly healed and Meadows was back playing basketball for the Firebirds by January.

Prior to a basketball game on Jan. 24, while eating his pregame meal on the bleachers, Cox told Meadows that he received scholarship offers to play football at the University of Louisville and Youngstown State University.

Those two offers quickly became the first of many. In the next three months, Meadows added offers from Florida State, Indiana, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Kentucky, Purdue, Ohio, Toledo, Pittsburgh, Akron, Illinois, West Virginia and Northern Illinois.

“Good athletes come pretty frequently. What separates the great ones is the character they possess,” Cox said. “Kyle is a good kid and he does the right things. He is respectful and very coachable.”

More offers are likely to come, but right now the coveted left tackle really likes FSU.

“I am real close to Florida State,” Meadows said. “That is where I want to be right now, but I am still listening to all schools.”

Meadows was won over when he visited the school for two days during his spring break.

“It felt like Lakota West down south,” Meadows said of Florida State. “They make you feel at home. The southern hospitality was terrific. I loved it down there.”

Florida State wasn’t his only visit. The lineman also visited Georgia, Cincinnati and took in last weekend’s spring game at Ohio State.

“I would have never imagined that I would be in this spot right now,” Meadows said. “When I first met coach Cox, he told me that I was going to be the next Jordan Hicks. I didn’t believe him, but now I am here.”

Lakota West grad Josh Chichester is ready for NFL Draft

Posted by akiefaber April 25th, 2012, 6:57 pm Post a Comment

If you happen to sitting next to a 6-foot-6, 235-pound football player at the movies this weekend, don’t be alarmed if he answers his phone.

Sometime in between when the NFL Draft begins Thursday and ends Saturday, former University of Louisville tight end and Lakota West graduate Josh Chichester is hoping for that phone to ring.

“I am planning to watch at least some of it, but I am definitely going to have my phone handy. I might go to the movies or something,” Chichester said. “That time can definitely be stressful if you sit there and watch the whole draft, thinking that any moment your name could be called. I don’t want that stress on me right now.”

For months leading up to the draft, there has been a lot of speculation on what many teams will do with their first-round selections. After those initial 32 picks, Chichester is hoping to be among the additional 221 former college football players who will be selected to play in the NFL.

Josh Chichester

“I don’t know where I am predicted to go. That is hard part about it,” Chichester said.

“I am hearing different things, but I am not worried. I have done everything that I could do and that was to perform in front of scouts. Hopefully, I left a great impression on them to, at least, want to draft me. At the end of the day, it is out of my hands.”

Like many other NFL prospects, Chichester participated in his school’s pro day. While there, in front of representatives from 20 NFL teams, the former wide receiver and Louisville basketball player showed off a vertical jump that cleared 37 inches and posted a time of 4.58 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

In comparison, his vertical jump was better than any other turned in by a tight end at February’s NFL Combine. Meanwhile, his 40-time would have placed him third among his position group.

Chichester followed up the pro day performance by participating in a regional combine in Detroit at the end March. He also worked out separately for the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots.

“I did everything I could to put myself in the best situation for a team to either draft me or sign me as a free agent,” Chichester said. “However it comes, I am going to consider myself blessed and take advantage of my opportunities.

“I am thankful that I have been included in this process and that it is finally here. Whatever God’s plan is for me, I am prepared to take it as it is.”
