No. 1 Sycamore girls down No. 4 Lakota East

Posted by akiefaber February 5th, 2012, 12:10 pm Post a Comment

Cincinnati Enquirer contributor Tom Ramstetter reports:

Senior forward Keri Kleist scored 17 points and senior guard Chloe Pavlech added 14 as the top-ranked Sycamore girls’ basketball team cruised past Lakota East 48-39 Saturday afternoon in a Greater Miami Conference girls’ basketball game at Lakota East.

It was the 16th straight win for the Aviators, who took over the top spot in the Enquirer Division I coaches poll from Princeton last week after a win at Princeton Jan. 25. The Aves’ last loss came at the hands of the Vikings Dec. 3.

“(Our schedule) has been brutal,” Sycamore coach Paula Hayden said. “We knew after Princeton that we could not afford another loss. Princeton has that reputation of running the gamut. So Princeton was a big game for us. We beat them, but then we had (Lakota) West, Colerain and (Lakota) East who are three of the top teams in the GMC. Every game, I put on the board that today is a championship game.”

Lakota East, ranked No. 4, was the fourth game in that stretch and Saturday was the Thunderhawks’ Senior Night game. Despite Sycamore building a 12-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, East stormed back to cut the lead to 40-34 with 2:59 to play on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Cydney Franklin to cap a 6-0 run.

Hayden called a timeout at that point and looked to her seniors to come out of the break and make a play. Pavlech drew the attention of the defense out of the inbounds and found a wide-open Kleist under the basket for a momentum-stealing layup.

“She did exactly what we wanted her to do,” Kleist said of Pavlech. “The coaches wanted her to drive because they know that people will help and I’ll be able to be wide open. It felt really great to get that pass and know it was going in. Plays like those really get me pumped. It felt good to beat them on their Senior Night.”

The play was not designed specifically for Kleist, but Hayden knew something would open up.

“We were moving the ball,” Hayden said. “Chloe broke down the defense. She drew three people, bounce-passed to Keri and Keri finished. We worked on that yesterday and we worked on it today. They executed.”

Pavlech was the key to another turning-point play in the first half, giving the Aviators the lead for good at 14-12 with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6:25 to play before halftime. Lakota East had just taken its first lead of the game, 12-11, on a 3-pointer from the wing by Bernice Satterwhite to cap a 7-0 run. Pavlech followed her 3-pointer with two free throws and Lakota East got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

“The biggest thing I thought was for us not to lose our composure and I kind of knew at the same time, we needed a big shot for us to get pumped,” Pavlech said. “I had missed my first three threes, but the fourth one I had confidence it was going in. I was wide-open at the top of the key and I decided to shoot it. That just got us super pumped. From then on, everyone believed this was our game.”

Satterwhite led the Thunderhawks with 14 points and Franklin added 11.

The Aviators travel to Middletown next Saturday for the regular-season finale with a chance to clinch their first GMC title since sharing the crown with Colerain and Princeton in the 1999-2000 season and their first outright GMC title since winning two straight in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994, if they get a little help with a Princeton loss, according to the GMC website.

“It’s amazing,” Pavlech said. “This feels great. We have a sign in our locker room that says we will be No. 1 and that’s what we’re working for. For us to have a chance to be No. 1 in the GMC is a big deal because our league is very competitive and very good.”

The league has been very good for a long time, but Hayden had a special feeling about this team before the season.

“I told the girls that for the first time ever, and I’ve been coaching a long, long time, that I put them No. 1 in the city and put them No.1 in the GMC,” Hayden said. “I don’t do that unless I believe in my heart that was a possibility.

“They know, but they’re not overly excited. They’re happy. They’re pleased. But it’s not over.”

Lakota West knocks off Mason, 73-65

Posted by akiefaber February 3rd, 2012, 11:35 pm Post a Comment

Cincinnati Enquirer contributor Tom Ramstetter reports:

Senior wing Jackson Blue calmly hit two free throws with 45 seconds to play and Lakota West clinging to a three-point lead and the Firebirds held on to upset No. 3 Mason 73-65 Friday night at Mason.

The Firebirds are unranked in the latest Division I Enquirer coaches’ poll.

Senior wing Kayuane Ross hit one of two free throws one possession later and junior wing Monty Boykins added two more to ice the game for Lakota West in the closing seconds.

“I’m just trying to relax and go through my normal routine so I can knock it down,” Blue said of his late free throws. “I just did what I do normally and made the shots. It’s just practice. Coach has us shoot a lot of free throws. It’s routine, so I’m used to just stepping up to the line and making a shot.”

Mason furiously trimmed a late 68-58 deficit to three points, led by senior guard JD Sprague who scored six in a 7-0 Mason run that put the Comets in position to tie the game. That set up Blue at the line with less than a minute to play.

“They were playing really well,” Boykins said. “They were trapping us and we had to make a few quick adjustments. I think we handled it pretty well. It was pretty nerve-wracking. It’s just the will to win. We had more heart than them tonight.”

Boykins scored a team high 25 points, junior point guard Ali Barnes scored 17 and Blue added 16 as West avenged a 70-60 loss to the Comets Jan. 6 at Lakota West.

Sprague led all scorers with a season-high 26 points. Mason senior forward Darin Harris added 14 for the Comets.

“It feels great to come in here and steal a win at Mason Arena,” Boykins said. “It’s always been tough for us every time we play here. It’s the first time I’ve ever won here. It was definitely something that motivated us, to get them back.”

Mason had beaten Lakota West in the teams’ three previous meetings. The Firebirds’ last win over Mason was a 59-55 overtime final Jan. 15, 2010 at Mason.

Blue said the Firebirds let a win slip away in the first game this season. This time, the Firebirds didn’t falter.

The Comets led briefly in the third quarter when a layup by Sprague put Mason In front 43-42. But Lakota West surged ahead for good when a free throw by sophomore Tyler Williams made the score 46-45 with 5:55 to play in the third.

“It was a big game for us,” Blue said. “We played them earlier in the season. We were up on them and we let them come back into it. We had a big lead again today and they started to come back. We just wouldn’t let them.”

Lakota West led 42-41 at halftime after leading by as many as 10 points twice in the second quarter. Senior guard Jonathan DeLotell hit a 3-pointer off the glass at the buzzer for Mason to give the Comets momentum heading into the locker room. Sprague scored 13 points in the second quarter for Mason.

Lakota West put together a rally of its own in the first quarter after trailing 4-0 early and 8-4 midway through the opening period. Barnes hit a 3-pointer with 3:45 to play in the first to give the Firebirds their first lead of the game at 12-11. Lakota West led 24-19 after the first quarter and never trailed again in the first half.

“We played hard defense, played together and it was a good team win,” Blue said. We can get a lot better.”

Lakota West 73, Mason 65

Lakota West 24 18 14 17 –73
Mason 19 22 10 14 –65

Lakota West (11-6 overall, 8-3 in the GMC): Ross 0 1 1, Blue 4 7 16, Barnes 4 7 17, Stalker 2 1 5, Williams 2 1 7, Boykins 9 3 25, Grove 1 0 2. Totals 22 20 73.

Mason (14-3 overall, 8-3 in the GMC): McVey 1 2 5, Sprague 9 5 26, Niehoff 2 0 4, DeLotell 1 0 3, Reed 1 1 3, Reale 1 0 2, Harris 6 2 14, Van Kleunen 1 6 8. Totals 22 16 65.

Lakota East and Lakota West name athletes of the week

Posted by akiefaber February 3rd, 2012, 9:57 am Post a Comment

The athletic departments at Lakota East and Lakota West high schools recently named their athletes of the week. Junior Emily Neihaus and senior Jamie Keesling received the honor at Lakota West, while senior Taylor Alden and junior Jimmy McCarthy were honored at Lakota East.

Niehaus led or was tied for the team lead in assists and steals the past three games, at Oak Hills last Wednesday, at Sycamore last Saturday and against Lakota West this Wednesday. She also tied a career high with 11 points in the 68-52 loss against Sycamore.

Keesling was the only double winner for Lakota West wrestling last week. Keesling, who competes at 170 pounds, earned a 2-0 decision in last Wednesday’s match against Lakota East. He also added an 11-8 win at Harrison last Saturday.

Alden, according to EastThunderhawks.com, has been among the team leaders in each of the matches. Also, according to the high school sports website: “Her consistency has helped the team keep pace and helped to push all of her teammates. She has been willing to step into whatever position is asked of her in the baker games and has performed well.”

McCarthy, according to EastThunderhawks.com, rolled a 424 series (221, 203) to lead the boys’ team to their first victory of the season over Kings. This was the high series rolled by any of the boys this year and it came at a good time as it led them to a 99-pin victory. McCarthy also had a solid day bowling in the fifth position on the baker team. Despite being a first-year team member, he has consistently been among the team leaders and has shown good improvement, according to the Lakota East athletic website.

Lakota West’s Dawson Fletcher officially signs with Indiana

Posted by akiefaber February 1st, 2012, 7:56 pm Post a Comment

Dawson Fletcher signs with IU

After verbally committing in June, Lakota West safety Dawson Fletcher made it official when his signed national letter of intent was faxed to Indiana University on Signing Day Wednesday morning.

“I never thought I would be going to Indiana, but I was just in the right place at the right time,” Fletcher said.

The right time and place was an IU summer camp where Fletcher impressed head coach Kevin Wilson.

“Dawson’s was as impressive or the most impressive kid we had in camp last year – running, jumping, change of direction,” Wilson said.

“We’ve got him as maybe a safety-type, but you watch him run and he might be a corner when he gets here because he’s not so big that he can’t run, but you can see physically he will come up and tackle very well.”

It was Fletcher’s versatility that also impressed IU defensive coordinator Doug Mallory.

Lakota West summer football “To be able to recruit a defensive back that has that versatility just makes him more marketable,” Mallory said. “To be physical enough to play safety, but athletic enough to play corner, I like that combination. Those kids are hard to find.”

It didn’t take long for Wilson and Mallory to decide to offer a scholarship to Fletcher, who at the time didn’t have one.

However, after performing well at earlier summer camps, Fletcher was expecting to receive offers from the University of Toledo and Ohio University. Even though more offers appeared to be on way, Fletcher quickly gave his verbal commitment and became an instant IU fan.

“It was exciting, but surreal the same time because it wasn’t long ago that I was still watching college football and thinking that it is so far away,” Fletcher said. “Then when you are a senior in high school you almost don’t believe it. I am just blessed that I have this opportunity.”

This past fall, Fletcher was second on Lakota West in total tackles with 70. The all-GMC first teamer also had 5.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 interception that he returned 77 yards, 3 pass breakups and 1 forced fumble.

Lakota West faxes out letters of intent for seven players

Posted by akiefaber February 1st, 2012, 4:19 pm Post a Comment

A total of seven Lakota West student athletes signed and had their letters of intent faxed to colleges on National Signing Day Wednesday.

“When you have these kids signing out, what a great opportunity for their lives and I am not talking about football. They have all been given an opportunity to give themselves such a step up in life,” Lakota West head coach Larry Cox said.

“Today is about winning and they won through their academics and their athletics. They have proven themselves worthy to the level, which is one step away from the pros, to play football again. How can you not be excited about that?”

Headlining the 2012 Lakota West class of seniors was Indiana University signee Dawson Fletcher, who verbally committed to IU prior to this fall’s high school season.

Fellow senior defensive players lineman Blake Bell (California University of Penn.), linebacker Jordan Darland (Olivet Nazarene University), linebacker Cole Stalker (University of Findlay) will also continue their football careers at the next level.

Bubba Williams signs with Lindsey Wilson Offensively, lineman Beau Odom (Georgetown College), wide receiver Bubba Williams (photo – Lindsey Wilson College) and wide receiver Kayaune Ross (Fort Scott Community College) will also play football in college.

The 6-foot-3 200-pound Ross provided matchup problems for other teams in the Greater Miami Conference in 2011, averaging 25.6 yards per catch. Overall, Ross finished with 14 catches for 358 yards and six touchdowns. For his play, Ross was named second team all-GMC and earned him attention from many Division I scouts, according to Cox.

“Fort Scott is in the Kansas JUCOs, which is the toughest in the nation,” Cox said. “They will sign out 10-to-12 Division I players per year. He has a great opportunity and he is very humble and grateful for it.”

This week, two former Fort Scott players who went on to sign with the University of South Florida, will be playing in the Super Bowl. Both players, linebacker Jacquian Williams (78 total tackles in 2011 as a rookie) and Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (86 total tackles, 16.5 sacks in 2011), are key contributors on the New York Giants’ defense.

In addition to the signees, according to Cox, Lakota West senior running back Marcus Davis will be a preferred walk-on or possibly a greyshirt at Murray State University. Davis rushed for 1,118 yards in the fall and is third in school history in career rushing yards.

(WestChesterBuzz.com will post a separate story on Dawson Fletcher soon with comments from the IU coaching staff)
