Ledyard King, Gannett Washington Bureau, reports:
WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner and his wife have bought a luxury condominium in the exclusive enclave of Marco Island, Fla.
The $835,000 condo is located in a tony 14-story tower known as The Tampico, which furnishes its well-appointed three bedroom/three-bathroom units with a host of amenities, according to real estate records and a local Realtor’s description of the waterfront residence.
Boehner shared news of the Feb. 11 purchase with colleagues during this past weekend’s gathering of congressional Republicans in Sarasota, Fla., said his spokesman, Michael Steel, confirming a report Wednesday by the conservative Breitbart News.
“This area of Florida has been the Boehners’ family vacation spot for many years, and rather than continue to put money into vacation rentals year after year, they decided to buy a condo,” Steel said in a statement. “Their home is in West Chester, Ohio, and will continue to be.”
The purchase has stoked already-simmering speculation that the 12-term Republican from suburban Cincinnati may be preparing an exit from the House, where a split between moderate and conservative GOP lawmakers has made legislating difficult.
Last week, only 27 of the 232 House Republicans joined Boehner in voting for a bill to extend the nation’s debt ceiling for another year, a measure key conservative groups opposed. It narrowly passed with support from all but two Democrats.
Boehner has said he has no plans to step down, which Steel reaffirmed Wednesday.
Real estate records filed with the Collier County, Fla., clerk show the Boehners took out a mortgage of $650,000 to help finance the purchase from John S. Lucas Jr. The unit comes with a quarterly condo fee of $3,900, records show.
Local Realtors A. J. DeHanas and Rachel DeHanas describe The Tampico on their web site as “Cape Marco’s luxury residence (rising) over the sugar-white shores of the Gulf of Mexico, offering spectacular gulf and island views from gracious terraces.”
Residences come with kitchens “smartly equipped with Poggenpohl cabinetry, Corian countertops and full General Electric Monogram Series appliance package, sure to delight the chef in the family. Master suites offer spacious master baths complete with large walk-in shower and whirlpool tub.”
Floor plans range from 2,060-2,700 square feet and include include a wet bar.
Condo.com, a real estate web site, says unit prices at The Tampico are as high as $2.2 million.
