With (Saturday night’s) 3-1 win over Little Miami in the OHSAA Sectional Tournament, Lakota West Head Coach earned her 400th career win as a Varsity Head Coach (400-192).
Coach Tracey Kornau has the rare distinction of having played on an Ohio Division 1 State Championship team and having coached one.
As a high school student Tracey (Thompson) was the setter for the Seton teams who were state runner-ups in 1983 and state champions in 1984. She was an All-State first team selectee in 1984 and the City Player of the Year. After completing her athletic career with the Seton Saints, where she lettered in basketball and track, as well as volleyball, she was awarded a volleyball athletic grant in aid by West Virginia University.
Thompson played volleyball for four seasons for West Virginia serving as captain of the Mountaineers 1988 team. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education/ Physical Education in 1990 having been selected to four all-conference academic awards. At the time of her graduation she held the West Virginia records for most sets in both a season (1251) and a career (3359), marks that still stand as the 2nd and 3rd highest in Mountaineer history.
She was hired as the head coach at her high school alma mater in 1990 and immediately guided the Seton Saints to a 22-5 record and regional runner-up honors (final 8 in state).
The following year coach Kornau moved to Lakota where her teams enjoyed continued success. The highlight being the 1994 season which saw the Thunderbirds win their second consecutive GMC championship, be named #1 team in Cincinnati, and go on to win the State Championship. That team finished the season 26-1. Coach Kornau was recognized for her efforts by the Greater Miami Conference as their coach of the year, by the Cincinnati Enquirer as the City coach of the year, and presented with the State Coaches Association’s coach of the year award.
While at Lakota, Coach Kornau earned a Masters degree in Educational Administration from Xavier University.
In 1997 coach Kornau became the first head coach of the Lakota West girls volleyball team and immediately led them to a GMC championship. Her teams have since added championships in 2005,2006, 2009, 2010 and 2012. In 2011, she become just the 30th girls volleyball coach in Ohio to reach the 350 career win milestone.
Coach Kornau is a physical education teacher at Lakota West high school.
