Additional businesses in Liberty Township can now be properly identified by their address.
Almost 60 businesses and a handful of residents in Liberty Township who have the 45069 – West Chester Township – zip code can begin using Liberty Township, OH 45069 as their mail address instead of West Chester.
That’s a switch township officials have been fighting for with postal officials for at least a half dozen years or more, said Caroline McKinney, the township’s director of economic development.
“This gives them the opportunity to show their pride in Liberty Township,’’ McKinney said. “It allows these businesses to use the community in which they are located as their mailing address.’’
The businesses in question are generally located along Liberty Way and south of Ohio 129, McKinney said. Included is the 1.1 million-square-foot Liberty Center mixed-use project planned to open in 2015 along with Liberty Town Plaza, Liberty Town Center and some office condominiums.
Once Liberty Center opens, the number of Liberty Township businesses in the 45069 zip code is likely to double, McKinney said.
Businesses don’t have to switch their addresses. They can continue to use “West Chester Township” in their address because the post office will have it coded both ways, McKinney said.
“Our hope is that over time, as things need to be reprinted, or stationary ordered, they will use Liberty Township,’’ McKinney said.
This isn’t the first time there have been problems with identity when it comes to mailing addresses. Parts of Liberty Township are included in the zip codes for Middletown, Hamilton, Lebanon, Monroe and West Chester Township.
Several years ago Liberty Township residents in the 45011- Hamilton – and 45044 – Middletown – zip codes successfully petitioned the United States Postal Service for the right to put Liberty Township, OH in their address.
“The goal is to provide all businesses and residents the ability to proudly identify their Liberty Township location,” McKinney said.
