Both the Lakota East and Lakota West varsity softball teams won their season openers in convincing fashion on Monday. East defeated Fairfield by the score of 7-1, while West shut out Middletown 9-0.
In East’s win, senior Lea Buckenmyer threw a complete game and struck out nine batters. Offensively, junior Kadey Astrop was 2-for-2, scoring 2 runs, hitting a double and driving in a run. Junior teammate Gracie Sprockett drove in two runs and had a double.
East entered the game No. 2 in The Cincinnati Enquirer’s coaches poll, while Fairfield was No. 7.
The Thunderhawks next scheduled game is at No. 4 Oak Hills on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Lakota East 7, Fairfield 1

Meanwhile, West junior Ashley Sharp stuck out 11 batters in her first game of the season. Sharp also went 2-for-4 at the plate, with a double. Sophomore Haley Johnson also went 2-for-4 with a double.
Lakota West, which entered the game No. 3 in The Cincinnati Enquirer’s coaches poll, will host Sycamore Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Firebirds will then play at No. 1 Lebanon on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. before hosting No. 7 Fairfiled Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Lakota West 9, Middletown 0

In baseball, Lakota West lost to Hamilton by the score of 9-4 and Lakota East defeated Sycamore 18-5 in 5 innings.
West falls to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in the Greater Miami Conference. Its next scheduled game is at Hamilton on Wednesday at 5 p.m. West will then play at Mason Friday at 5 p.m.

Lakota East, on the other hand, defeated Sycamore 18-5 in 5 innings. The game was the Thunderhawks first of the season. Senior Brett Colburn was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and scored three runs.
