Former intervention and reading specialist Thomas Spotts grew tired of teaching students to tests.
Instead of helping the school district achieve better scores, Spotts decided that he would much rather help children become better students.
That was his reasoning for leaving teaching after 25 years in different school districts throughout Ohio to open the Focus13 Learning Center in Olde West Chester.
“Now, when I sit with a child, I get to do what I couldn’t do anymore in the public school system. I can now say, ‘oh, you are not getting this. Let’s figure this out.’ Instead of saying, ‘ok, we have to hurry up,’” Spotts said.
“It was what I used to do maybe 10 or 15 years ago.”
While Spotts’ learning center focuses on preparing students for ACT, SAT, PSAT and HSPT tests, it also provides flexible hours, 1-on-1 instruction and special education advocacy services.
Focus13 Learning Center, which opened in mid-August, is located at 8859 Cincinnati-Dayton Road in Olde West Chester in suite 003 on the lower level of the building.
