A Butler County shelter for animals is competing to become one of 50 shelters in the running for $500,000 in prize grants.
The Animal Friends Humane Society in Hamilton is one of 104 vying for 50 spots in the Rachael Ray $100K Challenge sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Fans and supporters may vote once a day through midnight April 16, in the qualifying heat. The five shelters with the most votes in each division will automatically earn spots, making up 25 of the 50 contestants. The other 25 will come from the remaining shelters with the most votes.
The top 50 shelters would then have to save at least 300 more cats and dogs from September through October than they did during those months in 2011.
The top shelter would receive a prize of $100,000; second place, $25,000. The shelter that gets the community to help, will receive $25,000.
Grants varying between $5,000 and $40,000 will be awarded by division to other shelters.
If the shelter wins, it would offer more programs to the community in the area of cost-cost spaying and neutering, mobile adoption and education, along with constructing additional storage areas at the Princeton Road facility.
