Lakota East junior Taylor Holden won the sectional singles tennis tournament Friday at Mason High School. Holden will now have the opportunity to advance to the state tournament if she advances to the top four in the district tournament this week at Centerville High School.
Also advancing to the districts was Lakota West junior Nicole Soutar, who will have to face defending state singles champion Sandy Niehaus of Mt. Notre Dame in the first round. Meanwhile, Holden will face Ursuline junior Diana Suarez in the opening round.
Lakota East will also be represented in the doubles bracket at districts. The freshman duo of Maddy Mueck and Paige Silverberg will face Seton senior Shelby Wauligman and freshman Maggie Walroth in the opening round.
Also, Lakota East junior Leeah Floyd and senior Sofey Fugate will face Vandalia Butler junior Vanessa Burke and sophomore Cheyeene Rogers in the first round.
The top four singles players and top doubles teams will qualify to the state tournament in Columbus Oct. 21-22.
The first two rounds of the district tournament will take place Thursday and the last two rounds will take place Saturday.
Boys’ soccer – Lakota West takes down Centerville – Lakota West junior David Piotrowski scored in the 74th minute to take down Centerville by the score of 3-2 Saturday. Senior Alex Wagnoner and senior Jon Campbell also scored for the Firebirds. The Firebirds haven’t lost since Sept. 10 and are now 9-3-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the Greater Miami Conference. Lakota West will wrap up the regular season this week at Princeton (4-9 overall, 2-5 in the GMC) Tuesday and at home against Lakota East (4-6-3 overall, 3-2-1 in the GMC) Thursday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
Boys’ soccer – Lakota East ties Fairmont – Lakota East tied Fairmont by the score of 3-3 Saturday. The Thunderhawks will have to face the top teams of the GMC this week, as they wrap up the regular season. First, Lakota East will play at Mason (9-3-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the GMC) Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then at Lakota West (9-3-2 overall, 6-0-1 in the GMC) Thursday at 7 p.m.
Girls’ soccer – Lakota East shuts out Fairmont – The Lakota East girls’ soccer team shut out Fairmont by the score of 2-0 Saturday. The win improves the Thunderhawks’ record to 6-7-1. Last year, Lakota East finished 4-13. Lakota East (6-7-1 overall, 5-2-1 in the GMC) will host Mason (9-2-2 overall, 5-0-2 in the GMC) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in its next scheduled match.
Girls’ volleyball – Lakota East sweeps tri – The Lakota East volleyball team played in a tri meet at Dayton Chaminade Saturday and won both of its matches – 25-14, 25-18 against Chaminade and 25-23, 25-18 against Seton. Lakota East (18-1 overall, 8-0 in the GMC) will play at Mason (9-12 overall, 6-2 in the GMC) this Tuesday at 7 p.m. in its next scheduled match.
