Lakota spring athletes honored by GMC

The Greater Miami Conference recently honored its student athletes by releasing its all-conference teams. Yesterday, June 8, the baseball and softball All-GMC teams were posted on WestChesterBuzz.com. In total, Lakota had 45 athletes named to all-conference teams this spring sports season.

Overall, it was a very successful spring sports season for the Lakota school district. In baseball, Lakota East won the GMC and the state championship. Lakota East also won a GMC title in softball, while Lakota West shared the GMC title with Oak Hills in boys’ volleyball.

In boys’ tennis, Lakota East junior Zack Mueck (photo) was named the GMC Boys’ Tennis Athlete of the Year. Mueck’s teammate’s Freddy Abunku, who will continue his career at Xavier University, was named to the All-GMC First Team. Lakota West senior Aaron Madaris and Lakota East senior Akash Unakantha were both named to the All-GMC Second Team. Also, Lakota West sophomore Nick Lang was named to the All-GMC Third Team.

In boys’ volleyball, Lakota East senior Wesley Meyer was named the GMC Boys’ Volleyball Athlete of the Year. Lakota West senior Rio Onuki, Lakota West junior Alex Vohland and Lakota East junior Michael Ricke were all named to the All-GMC First Team. Meanwhile, Lakota West junior Alex Baker and Lakota East senior Anthony Fiorenza were named to the All-GMC Second Team.

In boys’ track, Lakota West had five athletes named to all-conference teams. Junior Nathan Haynes (800 meters) was the only Firebird to be named to the All-GMC First Team. Meanwhile, junior Brady Holmer (3200 meters – All-GMC Second Team), the 3200-meter relay team (Will Clevidence, J.J. Weber, Reid Becker, Nathan Haynes – All-GMC Second Team), junior Will Clevidence (800 meters – All-GMC Third Team) and senior J.J. Webber (1600 meters – All-GMC Third Team) were all named to all-conference teams. Lakota West also had two athletes (junior Ian Trau – 3200 meters – and sophomore Will Wilson – high jump) given Honorable Mention. Lakota East sophomore Jordan Combs (pole vault) was also given Honarable Mention.

In girls’ track, Lakota East had six athletes named to all-conference teams. The Thunderbirds’ 800-meter relay team of Autumn Heath, Madeline Eroskey, Arianna Cooper and Kellsa Mbah was named to the All-GMC Second Team. Heath, who is only a freshman, was also named to the All-GMC Third Team for the 100-meter dash and 400-meter relay (relay partners included Kendra Thomas, Arianna Cooper and Kellsa Mbah). Lakota East junior Lauren Buck was also named to the All-GMC Third Team for shot put and discus. Freshman Kellsa Mbah (100-meter dash), Heath (200-meter dash) and 1600-meter relay team (Taylor Avery, Ariana Cooper, Caitlin Graska and Maria Brafford) were given Honorable Mention.
