News stations throughout the country including NBC affiliates in Texas, Maine, California and Missouri have been telling their audiences about a political bar in West Chester, Ohio, called the Grand Ole Pub. The bar, which opened Oct. 28, has the Constitution, pictures of every former president of the United States and historical information about America framed on its walls.
Langdon and his wife, Pat, who live in Fairfield, wanted to create an American pub to rival the English and Irish pubs throughout the United States.
“English and Irish pubs will display the flag and memorabilia from either country. We wanted to duplicate that with an American theme, so we started with the Constitution, the Betsy Ross flag, the Boston Tea Party, ‘Washington Crossing the Delaware’…We just wanted to tell the story of America’s founding on the walls,’” Langdon said.
However, the bar owners couldn’t shake its perceived political image.
Caricatures of Fox News anchors on the wall and flat screens constantly displaying the cable news network have also given the bar a Republican image.
The reasoning behind the channel choice is because Langdon believes that Fox News is the “most balanced” and the “most popular” cable news station.
Even the bar’s name, Grand Ole Pub or GOP, is getting credit for the Republican image.
“We kicked names around like Colonial Inn and Colonial Pub, but nothing really had a ring to it and when my daughter came up with Grand Ole Pub – it just sounded good,” Langdon said.
The All-American idea of the pub has also sounded “good” to the public. Fellow bar owners, local politicians and others have crowded the newly opened pub. It has been so busy that Langdon, who originally wanted a “soft start,” hasn’t had time to display an open sign in front of his new bar.
Local West Chester resident and soon-to-be Speaker of the House John Boehner has even checked out the restaurant. Boehner, who accepted an invitation from Langdon, attended the pub’s pre-opening party Oct. 23.
The pub serves soups, salads, appetizers and burgers. It features homemade recipes including a different sandwich recipe each month from a West Chester firefighter.
It is open from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The pub serves food until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
Grand Ole Pub is located at 8177 Princeton-Glendale Road and can be reached at 513-942-2444.
