The Lakota East football program will kickoff its season with a home game against Centerville, Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. It will be the Thunderhawks first regular season game under first-year coach Rick Haynes.
Last season, the Thunderhawks also opened their season against the Centerville Elks. In that game, Centerville rushed for a team total 208 yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries. The final score was Centerville 24, Lakota East 6.
Centerville: The Elks enter the 2010 season as one of the top Division I programs in the state. Centerville features an impressive defense that includes three D-I college recruits in defensive lineman Michael Bennett (Ohio State), linebacker Mike Replogle (Indiana) and defensive end/outside linebacker Kyle Rose (West Virginia). On offense, running back Tristin Boykin should get his touches. Boykin, who has an offer from Buffalo, rushed for 106 yards on 15 yards in last year’s meeting between the two schools.
Lakota East: The Thunderhawks kept the game close and trailed 7-6 at halftime in last year’s game against Centerville, in large part due to the play of graduated senior running back Pedro Powell. Versatile senior J.D. Whetsel will have to step up. Last season, Whetsel rushed for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 54 carries. He was also used as the team’s primary kickoff and punt returner. Like Centerville, the Thunderhawks defense, led by senior linebacker John Brady, looks to be the strength of the team.
