West Chester is currently working on a project with a $2 million budget, which will improve the 150-acre Beckett Park.
Beckett Park straddles Beckett Road. The west side of the park is where most of the construction is taking place. The east side of park is also undergoing some improvements, including a new shelter by its new Boundless Playground.
The big ponds that existed on the west side of the park have been drained. Some are completely empty and being enlarged (picture above).
One of the neat new features to the west side of the park will be the addition of an ice skating rink.
“We just thought it would be a nice update for the community. It is designed to be basically a shallow pool area. It will be nice water feature year round, but it has the potential to freeze over in the water,” said Barbara Wilson, public information & marketing officer of West Chester.
“It will be used if weather allows it too,” Wilson said.
The rink itself is not expected to be complete by the holidays, but the ‘bulk’ of the construction could be finished by the end of the year.
“The bulk of this should be done by the end of the year, but a lot of the plantings and things will not be done until the spring,” Wilson said.
“It won’t be, all of sudden, this lush area because it will be late in the year by the time we plant.”
The current construction of the park is in phase III. Below are a few pictures that were taken recently of the progress of the construction.
